Three Key Bits of Knowledge
- Endo/scopy (endo-within; scope-visual examination) literally translates into visual examination within and is the general term used to describe direct observation examination within the body.
- Endo/scope (endo-within, scope-instrument) literally means instrument, or tube, used for visual examination within (the body) and is the general term used to describe the instrument used to perform the procedure.
- The general terms endoscope and endoscopy are altered forming new terms which identify the body part being visually examined.
To see how this works, lets remove endo and insert bronch/o meaning bronchus.
endo/scopy – bronch/o/scopy – visual examination of the bronchus endo/scope – bronch/o/scope meaning the instrument used
One could say a bronchoscopy is a type of endoscopy and a bronchoscope is a type of endoscope.
