Drugs Often Have Several Names. Generic names are assigned in the United States by an official body. There is only one generic name. Brand names (also called trade) are assigned by the company, or companies, manufacturing the drug. There may be more than one brand name. The brand name is used when a drug is under patent protection; once expired (20 years after the filing date), the drug can be marketed under the generic name. Generic drugs are usually less expensive.
